NPS Face Mask Update: May 16, 2021

Dear Parents and Students,

As you are most likely aware, the CDC on May 13, 2021 released guidance indicating that fully vaccinated persons need not wear a face mask in most settings. The following day, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) clarified that the pandemic conditions in the state continue to constitute an epidemic in Michigan, while also updating guidance in gatherings and face mask requirements. Please be informed of the following update from Northville Public Schools that provides guidance on the updated requirements pertaining to face masks at school and school events.

Outdoor School Events and Activities:

  • While outdoor face mask usage is encouraged, it is now discretionary while outdoors.  Face masks are optional for students and staff at all levels for activities that occur outdoors.

  • MHSSA has also provided guidance consistent with lifting the face mask requirement for outdoor sports, including athletes, coaches, officials and spectators.  However, outdoor spectator capacity limits and testing for unvaccinated student-athletes remain in effect.

In-Person School Attendance and Indoor School Events:

  • At this time, except where approved face mask exemptions applications may apply, face masks remain a requirement for all students and staff while indoors. As with many school districts, we will continue to review the recent guidance and inform you of any potential changes moving forward.

With approximately a month of school remaining, we continue to prioritize the wellbeing of all students and staff in our schools and are pleased to offer a vaccine site for students and adults 12 years of age and up this Saturday, May 22nd at Northville High School. If you have not already signed up and would like to reserve a spot for yourself and/or all eligible members of your household, please click here: NHS 5/22/2021 COVID Vaccine Site REGISTRATION FORM.

The District sincerely and respectfully recognizes that there are multiple perspectives and opinions on the topic of face masks.  At this time, the protocols that have been in place, which are consistent with the Board of Education’s ongoing approval of the NPS Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan, will continue at all levels. We appreciate your cooperation and welcome input or comments.  We all look forward to a full-return next school year and sincerely thank you for your support and patience as the pandemic guidance continues to evolve.

Sincerely,
Mary K. Gallagher, Superintendent
