Classroom Close-Up: Ms. Tiba, Amerman Classroom Close-Up: Ms. Tiba, Amerman For this Classroom Close-Up we visited Ms. Tiba's 5th grade ALPS class (Alternative Learning Program for Students). They were working on their Narrative Text Analysis using Picture Books. Show Transcript Hi! Welcome! So I'm Mrs. Tiba and we are fifth grade ALPS at Amerman Elementary and you probably saw our students working in the hall, so what we're actually doing is we are reading short texts, picture books in particular, and students are thinking about what makes a book good or not good so they really have to dig deeper into how the author worked to make it good. They look at the messages in the book and they sit and talk together about the text and the writing that the author is using and then right now they're working on a display to showcase their thinking. Thank you for coming! And we are working on reading short picture books and then we need to look at them and judge them whether they are good, not good or great. We have to look at the pros and cons of the book and we have to see if this book is our favorite and if we would change anything for it. I like projects like this because we have our sort of own freedom in what we do so we can take our time as long as we're done by the due date and we can be creative in our own ways without wandering off too much. So far I have learned that you cannot be biased while judging these books even if you really like something you still have to find the weaknesses and even if you really don't like the book, you still have to find the good things because this book has been published and that means that it has good things about it.
