In recognition of her dedication to education, Ahlam Salem, Resource Teacher at Hillside Middle School, has been appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to the Governor’s Educator Advisory Council. This prestigious appointment highlights Salem’s commitment to enhancing Michigan's public education system.
Governor Whitmer recently announced several key appointments to various state boards and commissions, including the Educator Advisory Council. Salem, a special education teacher with Northville Public Schools, brings years of experience to the council, having also worked in Dearborn Public Schools. She holds degrees from Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, and the University of Michigan-Flint.
Salem’s term on the Governor’s Educator Advisory Council began on September 26, 2024, and runs through May 9, 2028. She succeeds Eva Coleman, whose term has ended. The council, established by Governor Whitmer in 2019, serves in an advisory role to review and make recommendations regarding legislation and issues impacting Michigan's public education system.
"I’m excited to advise the governor while also representing the Northville school district," Salem stated.
The council’s work includes identifying best practices in public education and recommending improvements. Salem’s appointment reflects Governor Whitmer’s commitment to building a diverse leadership team, with over 60 percent of recent appointees being women or people of color.
Salem’s role on the council will help shape the future of education in Michigan, bringing valuable insights from her years of experience working with students of all abilities.
These appointments, including Salem’s, are not subject to Senate approval.
