As of Monday, August 11, the State of Michigan has not yet passed the K-12 budget bill, which includes funding for the Michigan School Meals program. This uncertainty impacts whether free meals will continue to be available for all students in the coming school year.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice shared an update from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) acknowledging the challenges districts face without a finalized budget and strongly recommends that local districts offer free meals at the start of the school year to support student health, attendance, and performance.
The current Michigan School Meals program remains funded through the 2024–25 State School Aid budget, which is in effect until September 30, 2025. Northville Public Schools will continue offering free meals for all students through the month of September.
Families are encouraged to complete the Education and Nutrition Benefits form to ensure they are prepared if free meals are no longer available and to access additional educational benefits they may qualify for.
