Northville Public Schools is proud to announce the launch of a new initiative focused on supporting student wellness—Mentally Strong Mustangs. Made possible through Mental Health grant funding and in partnership with Nextform Counseling, this program is designed to help students balance the demands of academics, extracurricular activities, and personal wellbeing.
The program officially launched this fall at Northville High School with plans to expand to the middle schools. Supported by licensed mental health practitioners, Mentally Strong Mustangs focuses on providing education, mentorship, and responsive support for students, families, and staff.
“Our students are highly engaged and dedicated, both in the classroom and beyond,” said Dr. RJ Webber, Superintendent of Northville Public Schools. “With nearly 80% of our high school students participating in athletics, fine arts, or clubs, it’s important that we support their overall wellbeing as part of their journey toward excellence.”
The Mentally Strong Mustangs program includes:
- Workshops and presentations for students, families, and coaches focused on stress management, resilience, and student wellness.
- As-needed team and club support to help groups navigate challenges throughout the season or school year.
- A mentorship program (at the high school level) connecting students with trained peer mentors.
- For students seeking individualized support, referrals will continue to be made through their school counselors, who will collaborate with students, families, and staff.
To help lead this work, the district has partnered with Janine Guastella, Licensed Professional Counselor and Limited Licensed Psychologist, and owner of Nextform Counseling. Guastella brings over a decade of experience in the mental health field, along with a background as a former collegiate athlete. She currently serves as the Assistant Director for the Office of Behavioral Science with the Michigan State Police.
As part of the initiative, a mental health practitioner will be available after school and into the evenings to support students, coaches, directors, and sponsors involved in extracurricular activities.
Coming soon:
- Workshops for students on managing stress, staying motivated, and maintaining a positive mindset.
- Team support sessions to provide an extra boost during challenging times.
- Parent and caregiver sessions focused on supporting students’ wellness at home.
Northville Public Schools invites students and families to share their input to help shape the program.

“Our goal is to create a culture where wellness is part of excellence,” said Dr. Webber. “When our students feel supported, they perform at their best—both in and out of the classroom.”
Funding for this program must be utilized by September 30, 2027, and will continue to support high school and middle school students, their families, and the staff who work alongside them.
Together, we’re building a community of Mentally Strong Mustangs—where balance, resilience, and wellbeing are at the heart of success.
